Medical Hydrophilic Catheter

A hydrophilic catheter is a type of urinary catheter coated with a hydrophilic (water-attracting) polymer or lubricant that becomes slippery and smooth when exposed to water or saline. These catheters are designed to reduce friction during insertion, making the process more comfortable for the patient. 

Hydrophilic catheters are used for intermittent urinary catheterization, a procedure in which a catheter is inserted into the urethra to drain urine from the bladder. The hydrophilic coating facilitates smooth insertion and removal.

The catheter is typically made from medical-grade materials such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or latex-free alternatives, ensuring biocompatibility.

The hydrophilic coating on the catheter is activated by water or saline, providing lubrication to the catheter surface. This reduces friction during insertion and minimizes the risk of trauma to the urethra.

Some hydrophilic catheters come pre-hydrated, meaning they are ready for use without the need for additional water or saline activation.

Hydrophilic catheters come in various lengths to accommodate different patient anatomies and preferences.

Catheters are available in different French sizes, indicating the diameter of the catheter. The appropriate size is selected based on the patient's needs and medical requirements.

The catheter tip is often rounded or tapered to facilitate smooth insertion and reduce the risk of injury.

The catheter may have drainage holes (eyes) near the tip to allow urine to flow into the catheter.
